I had to name this bureau "Mermaid" because she was just talking to me in
that mermaid kind of language! The color was a hand mixed combination of Annie
Sloan Chalk Paint ® in Antique White, Duck Egg Blue and Provence. I loved the
lines on this bureau but the previous paint color didn't do it any justice and
it was screaming for a facelift. I feel in love with this shade... although the
photograph doesn't quite live up to the real life version, I hope you will get
the idea. The drawers are also painted in Old White and I gave the whole piece
two quotes of clear wax. The wax gives it a beautiful sheen and protects the
paint. The original wooden knobs were replaced with glass knobs which I think
gives the whole piece a soft "mermaid" kind of look.
I was happy to find a great home for this piece although kind of sad to see
it (her) go.
Here she is in all her glory...

Say Hello to the Gilded Lady!
Can I just say how much I love this classy girl? She's a perfect example of following your instincts and coming out on top. This antique bureau made it to my doorstep on a cold & rainy fall afternoon. I found her on Craigslist and was thrilled to get such a deal - $15 dollars and I was a happy camper. Well, once I got her home I realized that maybe I had a little more work on my hands than I thought. So, off to my favorite hardware store for some furniture stripper - this was going to be fun - I always wanted to try stripping furniture. How hard could it be? Wrong. That was the first and last time I'm going to strip furniture. It was a huge, messy, toxic task. Never again. Save that for the experts. But anyway, I was really happy with the way it came out. The piece has really cool old handles and great detail. The wood grain was beautiful and I was quite happy with my accomplishment.

And here she is... after her second makeover. Pretty right? Yes, I know you shouldn't paint over wood that looks like this. That was the verdict in my house anyway.
So that's where following your instincts comes in. I couldn't wait to get some paint on this baby. This is pretty much when my love affair with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint ® hit me.
I had to do it. I wasn't sure where to begin and was hesitant about covering up all that beautiful wood. I settled on Annie Sloan ® French Linen and the color was gorgeous on her. I still felt a little bad about covering the wood so I decided to highlight the grain on the top. I did a light wash with a mix of French Linen and Old White. I accomplished that by painting it on and then taking it off with a damp cloth so that the paint would stay in the grain. It looked great but I still felt she need a little something so I highlighted the detail work in gilt. I made a mix of silver and gold and came up with a slightly pink which tone which looks great with the French Linen paint.
And that's the story of the Gilded Lady and how she came by her name.
